Truevision Targa (.TGA) File Format

The .TGA (TARGA or Truevision Targa) is a raster image file format and was initally intended to use for Truevision's graphic cards. TGA is an acronym for Truevision Graphics Adapter and TARGA is an acronym for Truevision Advanced Raster Graphics Adapter. The original version of .TGA was specified by AT&T EPICenter/Island Graphics Inc. in 1984. The current 2.0 version of .TGA was authored by Truevision Inc. in 1989.

The 2.0 version of .TGA was enchanced with thumbnails, gamma value, textual metadata and alpha channel support. It can store 8-32 bits per pixel images. 32 bits targa image contains 24 bits RGB image and 8 bits alpha channel. The format supports color-mapped or trucolor images. The .TGA may store image data as RAW or RLE encoded (lossless data compression algorithm). The .TGA file format is widely used due to its simplicity, ease of implementation and lack of patent restrictions.
