ZSoft Paintbrush (.PCX) File Format

The .PCX is a device-independent raster image file format, the native file format for Paintbrush (a popular graphics editing software for MS-DOS/Windows). It was developed by ZSoft Corporation for their image editing software. PCX is an acronym for Personal Computer eXchange. The initial version of .PCX allowed to store only indexed images ranging from 2 to 256 colors. Later, the format has been extended to store 24 bits true-color images.

The .PCX can store 8-32 bits RGB images with optional 8 bits alpha channel. The format supports grayscaled, color palletted or true-color images. The .PCX image data is RLE encoded (lossless data compression algorithm). The .PCX metadata stores color palettes, color planes and their bit depth, image dimentions, etc. The .PCX file format was very popular on MS-DOS. Now, PCX is still used in a game development and has a wide support in many image editing software.
