Kodak PhotoCD (.PCD) File Format

The .PCD is a multi-resolution compressed image file format. It was designed by Kodak for storing photos on the photo compact discs (PCD). The PhotoCD system was announced in 1990, targeted to the most of photographic needs and intended for photographers, from amateurs to professionals.

Each Kodak Photo CD contains images in several resolutions (up to 4096x6144). There are the following standard resolutions: 128x192, 256x384, 512x768, 1024x1536, 2048x3072, 4096x6144. .PCD uses the image compression algorithm which consists of 3 phases: chroma subsampling, decomposing the highest-resolution image data and Huffman encoding. .PCD file format was popular and widely used among professional photographers, photo processing labs, etc.
